How to Plan a Nantucket Fourth of July

July 4th fireworks may be cancelled for 2021, but there’s still plenty of things to do to enjoy a Nantucket Fourth of July this year. Whether you choose to stay in town or head out to the beach, you’ll find it’s hard not to have a good time on island over the holiday weekend. Read on for five ways to spend your Nantucket 4th of July weekend.

A Nantucket Fourth of July Tradition: Main Street Water Fight

The annual water fight between the Town of Nantucket’s Fire Department and the Boynton Lane Reserves will take place on Main Street at noon on Saturday, July 3. The mid-summer soaking began in 1981, when H. Flint Ranney challenged Fire Chief Bruce Watts to a water duel and to this day remains a beloved local tradition…and a great way to cool off.

Margaritas at Millie’s

The food. The views. The cocktails. The sunsets. There’s a reason why locals flock to Millie’s on the beach in Madaket. A drive, bike, or NRTA shuttle ride from downtown, Millie’s is the perfect place to celebrate summer with margaritas, tacos, and more overlooking the ocean.

A Day in the Sun at Cisco Brewers

In lieu of a classic summer barbecue, head to the open-air patio at Cisco Brewers for a few hours of fun in the sun. The beloved local brewery has everything you need for a memorable day out: craft beer, cocktails, and rotating food carts serving snacks like pizza and dumplings.

The Perfect Beach Picnic From Bartlett’s Farm

Nantucket’s picture-perfect coastline makes an ideal backdrop for a Fourth of July beach picnic. Pick up your spread from Bartlett’s Farm: The island’s oldest and largest family-run farm has a variety of organic fruits and vegetables, hand-cut cheese, take-out sandwiches, quality meats, prepared pastas, jams and dressings, and more on offer throughout the day.

Ice Cream at The Juice Bar

The perfect antidote to a sweltering summer day? A healthy serving of homemade ice cream from The Juice Bar. While the fan-favorite local haunt does indeed sell juice, the draw here is the wide selection of ice creams coupled with delicious hand-rolled waffle cones and cups. Ice cream cakes and pies, ice cream sandwiches, and vegan flavors are also available.
