But do you know their history? According to @ackhistory: "Quarterboards have been used to name houses for over a century on Nantucket, but they originated as name boards for ships sailing the Atlantic. When these ships would wreck on the treacherous shores of the island, people would salvage the beautiful hand-carved pine signs that would sometimes wash onto the beaches. People would hang their mementos on their barns or carriage sheds. Local artisans continue the tradition by creating beautiful custom boards for homeowners across the island." The more you know!
