Theatre Workshop of Nantucket (50 Main St.)
Established in 1956, the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket brings plays, musicals, and other live performances to the heart of the island. Through October 6th, the company is presenting A.B. Gurney’s play The Cocktail Hour, which nabbed the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Off-Broadway Play. Then you’ll be able to ease into the holiday season with the Theatre Workshop’s production of Miracle on 34thStreet, the Musical, which begins November 15th and runs through December 9th.
White Heron Theatre Co. (5 N Water St.)
The White Heron Theatre Co. launched in New York City back in 2004 and moved offshore to Nantucket in 2012. Situated just behind the Whaling Museum, the theater will present Kevin Flynn: Fear of Heights September 27th through the 29th and October 3rd through the 6th. Then it’s time for a Charles Dickens classic transplanted to our New England isle courtesy of A Nantucket Christmas Carol, which runs November 22nd through the 24th, November 29th through the 30th, December 1st through the 2nd, and December 6th through the 8th.
Nantucket Arts Council (5 N Water St.)
The non-profit Nantucket Arts Council has been supporting the visual and performing arts since 1973. Besides offering grants for artists and educational programs, the council runs its own concert series. From September 29th through October 7th, the Nantucket Arts Council helps put on the Nantucket Arts Festival based at the Methodist Church at 2 Centre Street, with artwork, dance, music, poetry, and other forms of expression loosely based on this year’s theme, “Avoiding the Usual – Experience the Unforeseen in Unusual Ways.”
The Nantucket Musical Arts Society, founded in 1959, presents some fantastic summer concerts at the First Congregational Church on 62 Centre Street as well as free “Meet the Artists” events on Mondays at the Great Hall of the Atheneum (1 India Street).
Nantucket Music Center (56 Centre St.)
The Nantucket Music Centre also hosts concerts each year as well as a wide range of music classes in everything from guitar and drums to singing.
