Lodging for A Christmas Stroll on Nantucket

Treat yourself to the coziest and most well-appointed boutique accommodations in the heart of the Nantucket Downtown Historic District while taking part in what’s become one of our island’s signature yearly events: the Christmas Stroll!

The 45th Annual Chamber Christmas Stroll takes place, as always, on the first weekend of December—Friday, November 30th through Sunday, December 2nd—so you’ve got no time to waste: Book your lovely Greydon House room or suite today and join us for the merrymaking on Main Street in a mere couple of weeks!

The 2018 Chamber Christmas Stroll in Nantucket

The Christmas Stroll had fairly modest and straightforward ambitions when it was launched back in 1973. Downtown merchants needed a hook to convince islanders to conduct their holiday shopping locally rather than skip over to Cape Cod, and that hook became staying open late on the first Friday in December for the “Christmas Shoppers Stroll” and getting customers into the seasonal spirit with plenty of wine, mulled cider, hot chocolate, cookies, and other holiday treats.

Nowadays the Christmas Stroll enjoys an international reputation and draws visitors from far and wide with its bewitching festive atmosphere, its holiday refreshments and entertainment, and, of course, its fabulous potential for stocking up on gifts.

The Christmas Stroll Experience

Downtown comes decked out in countless Christmas trees—including the impressive 20-footer at the head of Main Street, which closes down for the happy crowds of shoppers, the costumed carolers, the live music, the craft shows, and all the other fun. Many Nantucket businesses continue the tradition of the very first Stroll by serving warm beverages and other holiday delights.

Around midday on “Stroll Saturday,” keep your ears pricked for the Nantucket Town Crier, who’ll officially ring in the event and then lead the merry masses over to the town wharves to greet Santa Claus himself, arriving, appropriately enough, via Coast Guard Cutter. (He’ll eventually make his way to the Jared Coffin House to take pictures with the kids.)

And spare some time to check out the Nantucket Historical Association’s Festival of Trees, which begins this weekend and “spruces” up the Nantucket Whaling Museum with 80-plus extravagantly decorated Christmas trees.
