Fourth of July Fun on Nantucket
Doesn’t summertime always seem to sneak up on you? It’s hard to believe the Fourth of July is just around the corner, but it is! Marking the nation’s birthday and this quintessential highpoint of the season doesn’t come any better than on Nantucket Island, and Greydon House provides the ideal boutique luxury accommodations for all the excitement.
Jetties Beach Fireworks
Independence Day festivities get underway with a bang—literally—the evening of July 3. That’s when a truly spectacular oceanfront fireworks show blazes along Jetties Beach, the pyrotechnics supplied by a barge positioned offshore.
The Fourth of July, Nantucket-Style
The Fourth of July proper comes packed with all-day celebrations. A unique tradition here on Nantucket is kicking off the holiday at 9 AM with a reading of the Declaration of Independence over at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House. This church, one of the great landmarks of Nantucket, dates from the early 1800s, and it’s a pretty special place to hear those immortal words spoken—and to enjoy some patriotic tunes courtesy of the Meeting House Community Chorus and the building’s vintage 19th-century Goodrich organ. You can even sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence following the reading.
The action moves onto Main Street in midmorning, where some all-out classic summer fun will go down: dunk tanks, face-painting, pie- and watermelon-eating contests, and more. This all crescendos to the famous Main Street Water Fight, which will soak the thoroughfare beginning at 11:45 AM. Bring your water pistol!
At 5 PM, families flock to Children’s Beach for tugs-of-war, sack races, and other kid-friendly fun.
